Community members and officials were on site Saturday, November 20 to celebrate the opening of a village of 25 small houses in the town of Baldwin Park.
Esperanza Villa is the first small family-friendly village of its kind in the San Gabriel Valley, and homeless residents are required to move into their cottages during Thanksgiving week.
âBaldwin Park is proud to spearhead this unique homelessness effort in the San Gabriel Valley,â said Emmanuel J. Estrada, Mayor of Baldwin Park. âSmall houses provide the security and privacy that more traditional collective shelters lack while helping residents make the transition to permanent housing. “
The mini-houses are heated and air-conditioned and include a bed, desk and outlet for recharging devices. The houses are intended to provide bridging accommodation for about three months before residents are placed in permanent accommodation; this makes it possible to serve up to 100 people per year.
The Town of Baldwin Park, the San Gabriel Valley Regional Housing Trust and the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments have joined forces on this project. The city provided the site at 14173 Garvey Ave., contributing time and manpower.
The Housing Trust and SGVCOG provided technical assistance, $ 500,000 in grants for site preparation and the acquisition of houses and facilities as well as $ 800,000 for the first year of operation with options to fund projects. additional years, according to a press release.
