City Of Davis: City Of Davis Wins Beacon Leadership and Innovation Award for Healthy Davis Together Collaboration

October 22, 2021 9:10 a.m.

The City of Davis announced today that it has received a Beacon Leadership and Innovation Award from the Institute for Local Government (ILG) for interagency collaboration for its partnership with UC Davis on the Healthy Davis Together (HDT) project. Healthy Davis Together has helped prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the city and coordinated the gradual return of UC Davis students to the community.

Healthy Davis Together launched in September 2020 and within months began free saliva-based tests at several locations around the city. This month, HDT passed the milestone of one million tests completed (including those from the expanded county project Healthy Yolo Together).

The initiative also provided community outreach on testing, business-focused outreach and assistance, advertising to promote healthy behaviors, safe opening plans for businesses and schools, and the availability of vaccines.

“Our community is grateful and fortunate for this project which has helped protect our health and is helping us bounce back as a college town,” said Mayor Gloria Partida. “We are proud to receive the Beacon Leadership and Innovation Award which recognizes the many months of hard work by so many HDT partners.

“The UC Davis community doesn’t stop at campus borders,” said Gary S. May, chancellor of the University of California, Davis. “This partnership highlights the importance of a university for its community. Research, education and awareness, all hallmarks of a public university, have contributed to the success of this partnership by keeping our COVID-19 numbers exceptionally low this past year.

“The incredible ability of the Davis community to come together is the cornerstone of the success of Healthy Davis Together,” said Brad Pollock, Associate Dean of Public Health Sciences at UC Davis and Project Director of Healthy Davis Together. “The spirit of collaboration was evident from the very first conversation we had between community, city and university leaders, when the program was just an idea and it stuck. a real partnership since.

The Innovation and Leadership Awards aim to celebrate the efforts of local governments to implement collaborative, inclusive and equitable climate change resilience and adaptation programs. In addition to the city of Davis, ILG has honored the cities of Fremont, Irvine, Truckee and Manhattan Beach with the Beacon Leadership and Innovation Awards.

Currently, 165 cities, counties and special districts across the state participate in the Beacon program. ILG created the Beacon program to provide year-round recognition and support to local California agencies who strive to create more vibrant and sustainable communities. The Beacon Awards recognize the voluntary efforts of cities, counties and special districts that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, conserve energy, and adopt policies that promote sustainability.
