Financial assistance

Saline urges residents to seek help from government officials with water bills

Saline currently faces surprisingly high water bills. This is in addition to the situation the city found itself in recently when it was legally required, under a settlement with the State of Michigan, to invest in the expansion and modernization of its aging sewage treatment plant to comply with environmental regulations for the growing community.

But with a potential long-term bill of $18 million to do this running into the millions, and Saline’s relative wealth makes it less likely the city will have access to financial assistance, city officials have urged residents to call their elected representatives to ask for more funding assistance.

“We are aggressively competing for federal and state funds to help fund repairs as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation of our wastewater treatment plant, and creating new funding streams will reduce our burden on our businesses. and residential utility payers. Specifically, we requested last year, and will be requesting this year, an $18 million credit to our plant. We also spoke last week with Senator Gary Peters’ office, and we are applying for a community grant initiative, which is an EPA program. This grant request will likely be in the range of six to seven million dollars,” Saline Mayor Brian Marl said at the Oct. 3 city council meeting. “These demands are often successful only if citizens avail themselves of the democratic process; get involved, reach out to our lawmakers in Washington, and advocate for Saline to receive its fair share of funding.
